BEYOND THE BRIDGE NEWSLETTER - SUMMER 2009

LiveWorkWell - Hand in Hand in Healthcare!

Greetings,

We’ve come a long way baby!  Welcome to the 21st Century, a blending of health and consciousness bringing about an awareness that has raised our level of health consciousness towards well-being.  At one time, this concept was relegated to the ‘health nuts’.  Now we know that most nuts are good for us.  When we shift our thought process in even the slightest way, we open ourselves to a world of wellness as we view it through different shapes and lenses.  It can be considered a state of being healthy that extends far beyond body and mind to a realm that includes the interconnectedness of our emotions and Spirit, embracing our Heart and Soul in ways that are indescribable.  Practically speaking, it can also be an approach to healthcare that emphasizes both quality and length of life. There is a wide spectrum of people fueling the demand for wellness services – that which maintains, improves, optimizes health and well-being.

Beyond the Bridge continues to subscribe to and promote the Integrative Healthcare approach where East meets West; forging a collaborative partnership through integration and interaction.  We have the ability to improve our health, and who doesn’t want to feel good about themselves by being healthy and living longer?  The following Health Series is both informational and experiential.

Kriya Health Mudra Series is a series of hand postures that by wrapping one’s hand around each individual finger directs breath, energy and light through the meridians which are energetic pathways to the organs.  The subtle energy of these mudras helps to balance the emotions as well as the elements within us.  When we work with mudras, we increase the flow of energy throughout the body.  Energetically, it is another way to utilize the body’s natural defense system.   Working with our hands is not only very nurturing and satisfying but self-healing as well.

Thumb: Connects to the Lung meridian and is associated with the Brain.  Energizes the lungs, improves breathing; good for respiratory ailments such as asthma, tuberculosis and pneumonia.  Revitalizes the brain – neutralizes depression, negativity and worry.  Clears the head and removes sadness from the heart.

Index finger: Connects to the Large Intestines meridian.  Can effectively treat problems associated with the large intestines such as constipation, diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome.  Removes anxiety and dread felt in the pit of the stomach.

Middle finger: Connects to the Pericardium (membrane around heart/liver) that is one of the organs connected to this meridian.  Research indicates it also represents the Brain and Nervous System.  Can assist with chest problems including pain, heaviness in chest, heavy breathing and heart palpitations.  Because the Liver is associated with anger, it can alleviate an imbalance as the result of anger and have a calming effect.

Ring finger: Connects to Triple Burner and Spinal Cord. Triple burner covers all the organs in the torso divided into three parts:  Upper – function is respiration; main organs lungs and pericardium.  Middle – function is digestion; main organs spleen, stomach, liver and gall bladder.  Lower – function is elimination; main organs kidneys, urinary, bladder and lower intestines.  The Triple Burner meridian controls the temperature of these organs and balances the physical body whose health relies upon this synergistic relationship.  Imbalances in the Respiratory, Digestive and Eliminative Systems can lead to a myriad of disturbances in the body. Emotionally, it relates to grief and melancholy.

Pinky finger: Connects to the Heart and Small Intestines meridian.  Sending energy to this meridian can help the heart, balance the kidneys and soothe the nerves.  Good for insomnia.  Helps with communication skills and enables us to feel confident and comfortable with being ourselves in any circumstance.

1.    Begin with Long Deep Breathing (through your nose) for a few moments, focusing on each inhale and exhale.  Warm up exercise:   Interlace your hands, palms facing the chest with thumb tips touching each other at Heart Center, while pulling hands away from each other without parting.  Then, separately pull each finger including the thumb of both hands with the other hand.  This stretching motion already begins to work on the meridians.   1 – 3 minutes.

2.    Hands in lap – palms facing down.  Eyes closed – visualize and connect with the Sun.  Throughout the meditation:  as you inhale drink in the light from the Sun and as you exhale mentally recite I am a Beam of Light.  You are sending this healing Light throughout your body.

Right hand wraps around left thumb with the remaining left hand fingers in a relaxed position draped over right hand. 1 – 3 minutes.

Right hand wraps around left index finger with the remaining left hand fingers in a relaxed position draped over right hand. 1 – 3 minutes.

Right hand wraps around left middle finger with the remaining left hand fingers in a relaxed position draped over right hand. 1 – 3 minutes.

Right hand wraps around left ring finger with the remaining left hand fingers in a relaxed position draped over right hand. 1 – 3 minutes.

Left hand wraps around right index finger with the remaining left hand fingers in a relaxed position draped over left hand. 1 – 3 minutes.

Left hand wraps around right middle finger with the remaining left hand fingers in a relaxed position draped over left hand. 1 – 3 minutes.

Left hand wraps around right pinky with the remaining left hand fingers in a relaxed position draped over left hand.  1 – 3 minutes.

Experience and feel these healing energetic aspects.  Work on a particular finger for a specific health area/emotion or all of the fingers for complete well-being – up to 3 minutes for each finger.  If you are worried about something or feeling a bit depressed, give energy to the Thumb(s) or if you are feeling a bit anxious give energy to the Index finger.  This can be done at any time – in a pinch – and no one will have any idea that you are doing anything at all.  Try it!  These mudras have the ability to transform and heal destructive energies stemming from negative emotions.  This series is also excellent for jet lag – practice them on the plane before you land!  Landing usually takes about 1/2 an hour and without your cell phone or iPod, what else are you going to do anyway?

Note:  Results will vary with individuals depending on the length of time and consistency of the meditation practice. This information is not intended as medical advice and does not replace the services of a physician.

The Kriya Health Mudra Series is a simplified descriptive version of the Royal Kriya Mudra Series that is explained in greater detail in The Code of the Masters written by Joseph Michael Levry.

Breathe deeply, walk daily and Smile!
